we're turning those lights back on. i think it will make a difference. >> san jose will be reconnecting 900 street lights that were shut off in 2008 as part of a budget cut. >> we saved about $92,000 by keeping lights off. we recognize that in many places, the lights were simply a major concern for residents that were nearby. we had to do everything we could to find the money to get them up and running again. >> earlier this month, the city council planned to turn those lights back on. s something council members were anxious to do. >> reporter: district 8 had the most lights turned off. 179, to be exact. >> i'm making sure we prioritize the lights where we're most concerned about public safety. and i would be asking the department of transportation to do that. >> reporter: at the same time the city is working to turn the

rights back on, it's also scrambling to repair lights darkened by copper wire theft. >> we have about 125 locations that have been hit with copper theft and that's affecting 350 individual lights. so it's a big deal for us. . >> reporter: the deputy director of transportation says the city has spent $300,000 repairing copper wire. it's considering adding more money to deal with the problem. >> the department of transportation hopes to have them all reconnected within three months. live in san jose, nbc bay area news. >> kimberly, thank you. new at 5, rescued from the streets. a 16-year-old girl the victim of human trafficking is now in protective custody. the san jose police department can you recollect theed

kublgt conducted a two-day investigation. the second day of the operation targeted underage prostitutes. that's when officers found this 16-year-old who had worked as a prostitute since she was 11. >> a new development project that will transform the waterfront near at&t park has landed its first tenant. it's the first of many tenants expected to occupy the mission rock development. nbc bay area is live in san francisco with the details for tonight. >> this is a big deal for san francisco and for the mission bay neighborhood. the now-empty pier 48 will soon be transformed into a brew house. anchor brewing company is moving in. the mayor and the san francisco giants organization made the announcement today.

anchor brewing will be the first tenant and the anchor for the $1.6 billion development. but, again, the first tenant and the anchor of it all will be a san francisco icon, anchor brewing, which plans to give visitors a chance to get an up close look at the art of brewing craft beer. >> we feel an iconic san francisco company tieing in with us. i think they want to make a great experience for people. not just before and after games, but, also, just every day as a destination. >> we see this as being a bustling sensor in san francisco. there will be so much going on here. we'll have people wond iring arou wondering around here and going on tours. >> this is san francisco. we deserve to have a better use of our waterfront.

four people are dead after an orange county shooting rampage. it began at the gunman's home in laderra ranch just before 5:00 this morning. the gunman then drove north, carjacking and shooting a driver in tustin. minutes later, the shooter carjacked another driver. witnesses say he shot him execution-style in the street. the fourth sop was another carjacking. about an hour after the drama began, police stopped the gunman

in the city of orange where he kmited suicide in an intersection. police have ieed him as an unidentified part time student. they say the woman he killed in his house was not married to him. >> two police officers who were gunman on christopher dorner's hit list spoke out today. >> never, ever did i think that somebody would go to this extent in their rage over the discipline that was handed out to them! there were many times where we never broke down. we'd go in the garage and cry because we didn't want our kids to see the anguish and the hurt that we were feeling. >> an emotional news conference today. the couple spoke publicly today for the first time that dorner

was killed. they also disagreed with dorner's claims of racism within l.a.p.d. >> olympic star thought he was shooting an intruder on valenti valentine's day. in a south african courtroom today, they said he heard someone in the bathroom in the middle of the night and thought his model girlfriend was still in bed. the double amputee grabbed his pistol and fired several rounds. police say steroids were found in the bedroom. his lawyer is maybe considering a roid rage defense. the judge has not made a decision yet whether to release on bail. >> a new crack down on driver who is get behind the wheel while under the influence on drugs. officials say the number of drugged drivers is going up. unlike the sp.08 threshold, there's no statutory threshold

for drugging and driving. >> the legislation would create a step system for prosecuted drivers. it did exclude drugs prescribed by a health care practitioner. >> robotically assisted hysterectomies may be on the rise, but not worth the extra cost. the study shows that on the whole, the robotic procedure is no better than conventional surgery and it costs $2,000 more. patients who opted for the robotic route stayed a shorter amount of time but the complications were similar to laparoskopic procedures. >> you might think of dogs and cats, but a mill valley woman wants to add to that list. >> she would like you to think more about rabbits. she said if you did, you'd be

the san francisco shelter hasn't had to euthanize a rabbit in ten years. and they won't be starting today. now, marcy wasn't always an unwanted bunny's best friend. she was an advertising and marketing executive for years. it wasn't until she burned out on the corporate track that she landed on the bunny trail. >> i always loved animals. i didn't really picture this being a career. >> it's okay. >> it started by falling in love with the species after fosti ieg just one. >> they're way smarter than people think. they're super intelligent. they' they're very opinionated. >> they are truly the underdog.

and i have always had a thing for helping the underdog in my life. and they desperately need help. >> so marcie started saving them and she couldn't stop. she says she has never worked longer. never worked harder. marcy is constantly managing the flow of rabbits among shelters, foster homes and her own basement. at any one time, there are 150 rabbits in the save a bunny network. over the life of the group, they spared some 5,000 rabbits. >> it's heart breaking and hopeful, depending on the day. >> when he got here, he could barely raise his head. >> marcy says it can be, at times, overwhelming. as hard as she tries, she can't possibly save them all.

but not trying wouldn't save a single one. >> i spent a lot of time with marcy and boy, does she work a lot with this. i'd say 80 hours a week. she has terrific relationships with shelters around the area. >> but 5,000 rabbits saved over the life of the group, that's pretty impressive! that is impressive. they are cute. they need good homes. >> let's bring in our chief meteorologist. i got a call about an hour ago, rain or hail in mountainview. >> i know. all it's going to take is a big

uplift to the atmosphere and you get hail created. now, pushing off to the south, what we're finding is plenty of instability left in the atmosphere. that is firing off a u few pockets of heavy rainfall. you can see a few areas of orange popping up through a lighting strike right now even in the past half hour. just a reminder, if you're outside and you do see that lightning bolt, you want to go inside and take shelter. again, all it takes is one lightning bolt. as many of you know, you can have some deadly consequences. right now, this storm cell, again, firing off a lightning struck. all of that activity, that is juicy enough, let's say, to produce that lightning strike. it's going to be heading off towards morgan hill. again, watch that one pretty closely, especially if you're expected to travel over the next half hour. otherwise, our rainfall totals, impressive.

san francisco with 4500. that rainfall is enough to give us more in one day than for the entire month of febl. let's also give you up to snow in hamilton. there we go. there it is. left for a slippery commute earlier this morning. there's plenlty of up liflt in those clouds. it's part of that same area of moisture that produced that lightning strike. now, we'll also bring you up here to oakland. there you can see clear skies. we do have wind 15-20 miles per hour. speaking of the winld, here it is at the current moment. pretty strong on shore flow. a little bit of a windchill at this hour.

let's get you into the weather boards here. we're going to get this drier coastal system moving in for thursday. slight chance of a shower, but, mainly, we're expecting some cloud cover to build up and also some breaks of sunshine. no other larm storm coming in that forecast. temperatures are going to stay cold and mainly in the 50s. so the key thing to remember tonight, a few stray showers possible, mainly near the coastline and the peninsula through about 9:00 p.m. also, into tomorrow morning, skppting a clearing forecast. as many of you know, clear skies mean some extremely cold temperatures and look at these numbers for tonight. 30 in napa, 34 in san jose. that will develop patchy areas of ice on the roads, namely up into the north bay and also for the ooesz bay. so make sure to decrease that speed tompl morning and keep plenty of distance between you and that car in front of you.
